Cost basis error: Missing Volume

A cost basis error means that something in your data needs to be corrected before you can book the affected transactions. These errors prevent reporting until the issue is resolved.

What Is a Missing Volume?

One common type is the missing volume cost basis error, which happens when the asset balance in your workspace doesn’t match the recorded transaction data, resulting in a “negative balance.”

Example:

  • Your wallet shows 5 BTC.

  • A withdrawal of 10 BTC occurs.

  • Cryptio shows 5 BTC because it cannot reconcile the missing 5 BTC from earlier activity.

The error doesn’t tell you the exact moment the transaction went missing. Instead, it flags the point when Cryptio first detects the inconsistency.

Step 1: Check Workspace Settings

Start by confirming your workspace cost basis setting:

  • Universal → All transactions are pooled together. In this case, please contact support, as these can be harder to diagnose.

  • Per wallet → Transactions are tracked wallet by wallet. Proceed to Step 2 to locate the issue.

Even with a universal setup, you may still be able to spot where the issue lies by following the next steps.

Step 2: Locate the First Missing Volume

Use filters to identify when the negative balance first appears:

  1. Go to Transactions > Filter > + Add filter.

  2. Select Cost Basis Error → Missing Volumes.

  3. Sort by Date (ascending) to see the earliest instance.

Alternatively, navigate to Needs Review > Missing Volumes to see all affected transactions.

Step 3: Check the Wallet or Source

After you’ve identified the wallet linked to the Missing Volume:

  • If the wallet is connected through a Cryptio integration (e.g., exchange, custody, or on-chain connector), contact support with the wallet name and affected asset(s).

  • If the wallet was added via a CSV import:

    • First, re-check the CSV against your original export from the exchange or wallet to confirm no transactions are missing.

    • If everything looks correct but the error remains, share both the CSV file and details of the source (exchange/chain) with support.

  • If the wallet is from an exchange, download a Transaction History Report from that exchange and attach it when contacting Support.

The more details you provide (wallet name, source type, CSV or reports), the faster our team can get to the bottom of the missing volume!

When contacting support, please include:

  • The asset(s) affected

  • The wallet(s) involved

  • The earliest instance of Missing Volume per asset/wallet

  • Any Transaction History Report you’ve exported

Step 4: Identify the Missing Transaction

In most cases, Missing Volumes are caused by an incomplete transaction history (e.g., Cryptio import dates start after an initial acquisition).

Steps our Support team will take:

  1. Generate a Historical Balances: Wallet Breakdown or Asset Roll Forward report in Cryptio.

  2. Look for when the balance goes negative.

  3. Compare these balances against a block explorer or exchange transaction report.

  4. Narrow down when the mismatch began.

Once the missing transaction is identified, our team can help you correct the history and resolve the error.

Missing Volumes with Custom CSVs

If your data comes from a CSV import, Missing Volumes usually mean the CSV file is incomplete.

To resolve:

  1. Re-check the CSV file against your source (exchange or wallet export).

  2. Confirm that deposits, withdrawals, and transfers are included in full.

  3. Upload the corrected CSV into Cryptio.

If you’re unsure, send the CSV to Support along with your source’s original export so we can cross-reference.

Next Steps

Many Missing Volume errors will require Support assistance. The more details and reports you provide, the faster we can resolve them.

If you encounter an MV error:

  • Collect your asset(s), wallet(s), and first error date(s).

  • Download any transaction reports from your exchange.

  • Reach out to Support with as many details as possible.
